"The first time I heard of PRK [photorefractive keratectomy], I knew it was for me. I dreamed of the day I would no longer have to wear glasses or contacts. This is no longer a dream. It's reality.
The surgery was relatively easy, lasting about 20 minutes for each eye. My right eye was done in June 1996 and my left eye four months later. As with all surgery, there was a time for healing and medication. My insurance company didn't cover the procedure. They consider it cosmetic and therefore unnecessary. But it wasn't expensive. "When I think about my PRK surgery, I wonder why I waited so long. I had the procedure when I was 40. Perhaps part of the reason I delayed was the cost. However, I know now that without the weekly expense of wearing contacts I will recover the cost completely in four years.
